About the Fisherman
Smoky Bay Fisheries is owned and operated by Jack and Eileen Hughes. For more than twenty years Jack has been commercial fishing in the pristine waters of the North Gulf Coast of Alaska. Based out of Homer, Jack and Eileen began their fishing business in the 1970's with Jack as captain and Eileen as partner and deckhand. Over the years, they have owned five different boats; now Jack fishes for salmon and halibut aboard the 43-foot "Smoky Bay," the namesake of the company.
In the early 1980's Jack joined a small group of fisherman, in a cooperative, that pioneered high quality standards. The co-op required fish to be gently handled and immediately iced. The higher quality standards earned members of the co-op recognition for their superior product and a higher price for their catch. Jack's early introduction to providing high quality fish has evolved to even higher standards today, resulting in the most premium grade product available in the salmon market.
Jack now spends part of the year at his home in Crested Butte, Colorado. Many of his friends and neighbors in Colorado asked him to bring back his delicious wild Alaska sockeye salmon. The requests kept growing and growing, so Jack decided to start marketing his own catch in Colorado. Now, Smoky Bay's wild Alaska sockeye salmon is sold at many natural food stores and specialty markets throughout Colorado, as well as on the Internet.
